This drumstick dal recipe is the way my mother makes it. I
love the flavor and taste of drumsticks in the dal, rather than plain dal
whenever I go to the market, I always make sure to buy drumsticks so that I can
add them to the dal

Tips for making drumstick dal?
- I added the drumstick right in the beginning if you have very tender drumsticks, you could add them with the onion masala, the drumsticks that I had were not very tender so they got cooked correctly
- Sometimes, if you pressure cook the drumsticks, they get overcooked and lose shape, thus they mixed in the dal it doesn’t appear nice and while eating too the drumstick seeds pop in your mouth, so use common sense while cooking any recipe with drumsticks
- I have used arhar dal ( tuvur dal) called in English pigeon pea with the drumstick as the taste two combine very well with each other but you can experiment with the same recipe with moong or chana dal
- Cooking dal for 25 minutes under pressure is good enough but as you can see I just used a simple pot so it took more than an hour to be tender
- Then it is an important part of cooking arhar dal that you must soak dal in warm water for at least 30 minutes before cooking
- I had soaked the dal thus cooking time of the dal is reduced if you don’t soak it then you will have to increase the cooking time it is advisable not to add drumsticks in the beginning if you don’t soak the dal
- The most important step in making pigeon pea lentils is that first roast them in a pan for 5 minutes why did I do this because arhar dal causes a build-up of gas and bloating in the belly so taking the step helps to reduce the gassy elements from the dal
- Don't add salt in between cooking dal your dal won't cook soft and tender
- Serve Drumstick Dal along with Rice and a bowl of curd for a wholesome weeknight dinner or even a comforting lunch.
